Astronaut Farmer, The

Astronaut Farmer, The
Astronaut Farmer, The (2006)

IMDB rating: 6.60

Plot: Texan Charles Farmer left the Air Force as a young man to save the family ranch when his dad died. Like most American ranchers, he owes his bank. Unlike most, he’s an astrophysicist with a rocket in his barn – one he’s built and wants to take into space. It’s his dream. The FBI puts him under surveillance when he tries to buy rocket fuel; the FAA stalls him when he files a flight plan – it’s post-9/11, after all. His wife is angry when she finds out their bank is initiating foreclosure. Charlie fears failure and decides, precipitously, to launch. Are twenty-first century American dreams just a sign of insanity? Are those who believe in dreamers only fools?

Are we becoming animals ?
There was a clearcut distinction between human beings and animals. We had a "live and let live" attitude. We used to protect those who are weak , downtrodden and ill. We used to respect women and ensure their comfort. But progressively we seem to be becoming animals and our animal instincts are overpowering our human instincts. We have forgotten god. We are believing more in materialistic pleasures. We have become manipulators and Jackals. And we are adopting survival of the fittest attitude which is against human attitude. What do you say ?
I am surprised by most of the answers. Don’t you think atrocities against women are increasing ? Are we not considering women and even girls as objects of enjoyment ? Don’t you think we care less day by day if we are hurting others ? Are we not getting rich by making others poor ? I think all these could be called animal traits against emotions, love , care , passion , empathy which are human traits, which are vanishing day by day.
what right we have to call ourself human being when we hit planes in world tower , when terrorist kill innocent people , when kids and young girls are sold for sex and this list can go on. Someone has said there is no difference in human beings since past. Human beings were like this 100,200,1000 years back ? obviously no. where we would reach at this rate of loosing our being humans ?
Frankly what I refer to as Animal instincts are really not exhibited by animals, so it has to be taken symbolically. Actually animals in reality are far better than today’s human beings !
Another point is how we just see and hear the news of "animal behavior" and forget about it ? Imagine yourself in position of a 13 yrs girl who gets gang raped by 5 guys for none of her fault. Imagine yourself in position of a innocent villager who gets burnt alive by terrorist. We hear these news and forget about it. Why ? Even if you cannot do anything about it but within you rights can you not raise voice against these animal instincts ? And prevent all behaviors which converts a human being into animal ?

We have always been animals. That’s nature.

We used to think that we were above and beyond nature, so we raped her silly. We’re still doing so today, though many of us are stopping, and all of us know it to be wrong.

I do, however, echo your sentiment to some extent. There seems to be a disturbing lack of honor and moral fiber, especially in the US. This is what happens when children are raised by the television, and parents can’t bear to mete out discipline. Children have grown up increasingly less reliant on, and therefor less caring of, those around them.

Since humans are living creatures and are not plants, fungi, or bacteria, we already are animals

Humans are Social Animals…
Fanaa_4_u | Dec 31, 2009

What are you talking about, the human race is the very definition of survival of the fittest, life is nothing more than one desperate act after another. People are animals….
eyes4mjonly | Dec 31, 2009

I say it has to do with power. change. and everything people are taught.
vera aFa | Dec 31, 2009

It’s the opposite. There is no time in human history that we have had more rights and compassion for others than the present. When were the weak and downtrodden taken care of? Or women respected? They were basically chattel until 50 or so years ago. You really need to take off those rose-tinted glasses when you look at the past.

Not Animals, Monsters.
Jay-Cub | Dec 31, 2009

I believe that there have always been "animalistic" traits among our species. We’re just starting to learn more about it. Without the technology we have today, we were probably very isolated and we were limited on the information we receive about how horrible humans can be. With the Internet, a source of an abundance of information on human nature, we can see some of the worst things about us that have probably already existed since we first walked the Earth.
Kirsti | Dec 31, 2009

Technically we are animals. But I know that’s not what you mean.

Though I disagree with some of your points, I think it’s because we’re becoming more…individual. We have our own thoughts and don’t think because someone told us to. I think this is for the better
Brad | Dec 31, 2009

I say you have it exactly backwards. Society protects more now than we ever have.

"We used to respect women and ensure their comfort."

Oh, when was that? It’s been less than 100 years since women were considered ‘people’ legally! It’s been less than 50 since rape was legal in the US. Learn some history.

p.s. We are animals, biologically/scientifically.
RatZ | Dec 31, 2009

Lol, to answer your question a little more in depth, survival of the fittest isn’t something we’ve just recently adopted, it’s been the law since the dawn of time. We still do protect the weak, and some of us still do respect women. I will concede that aggression has grown in the masses, but I attribute that to the "meek" not wanting to wait so long to inherit the earth, lol. Not to mention it’s no fun watching corporations and governments walking all over the people and getting away with it. Some people are just getting more fed up with it than others.
And, personally, the only clear cut distinction between humans and animals is our brain.
imrt70 | Dec 31, 2009

I think we will always have that animal instinct side to us…to adapt instantly to situations. The problems with societies is when they desire change through luxuries and decadence; instead of innovation and evolvement. When we can indulge in distress over the color of our car or the prestige of a brand name…then I think our animal instincts are misdirected inward…and our concerns become more primitive and infantile IMHO.

what were the causes of the Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty?
Or what were the motivations of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty
what caused it to occur?

The Mexican-American war. America defeated the Mexican soldiers to secure the land of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California and parts of other future states which belonged to Mexico and the US wanted them. After the defeat of Mexico we paid them $15 million for the territory mentioned above. This was part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo along with the annexing of the above mentioned territory to the US.
