Lookout, The (2007)

IMDB rating: 7.40

Plot: An admired high school hockey player (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) with a bright future foolishly takes a drive in the night with his girl friend and two other friends with his headlights off with devastating results. The former athlete is left with a brain injury that prevents him from remembering many things for extended periods of time. To compensate, he keeps notes in a small notebook to aid him in remembering what he is to do. He also lives with a blind friend (Jeff Daniels) who aids him. Obviously, with the mental incapacitation, he is unable to have meaningful work. Thus he works as a night cleaning man in a bank. It is there he comes under the scrutiny of a gang planning to rob the bank. The leader (Matthew Goode) befriends him and gets him involved with a young woman (Isla Fisher) who further reels him in. After they get close and after reeling him in with his own failures, the bank plan unfolds. Confused but wanting to escape his current existence, he initially goes along with the scheme. After realizing he is being used, he attempts to stop the robbery, which of course immediately goes awry. Bruce McGill and Alberta Watson also co-star as the young man’s parents, who still search for the person that was there before the tragic crash.

Directors: Frank Scott

Actors: Gordon-Levitt Joseph,Daniels Jeff,Goode Matthew,McGill Bruce,Di Zio Sergio,Huband David,Dunham Greg,Kelly Morgan,Berg Aaron,Crime,Drama,Thriller,

Why did she use up the extra fuel to drive me around to lookout point?
Her car was making a loud clunking noise from the front wheels while going round a corner and she asked me to go along for a ride in the car with her so that I could hear the noise. The first corner we went around there was the noise so we went right around the block twice to confirm the noise happens during turning left and turning right.

Then she said well lets go for a run out to the lookout point (we live by the sea and our town has a small lookout area which added about an extra 7mins to the whole trip)

I have known her for the last 3 and a half years She has always been very friendly and talkative towards me most girls are not. Every time I am around her she is very happy, giggly and funny as anything

I couldn’t figure out what was making the noise in her car and the funny thing is she has never been bothered by it since.

She like me has very little money, why did she use up extra fuel driving around to the lookout point?

Maybe to thank you for the trouble? It’s not always like that you know. Don’t limit your thinking.

Repubs, will a win in 2010 be longterm, or similar to the events that followed 1994?
The midterms take place on November second, so this is assuming that the political tide does not change in the nine months between now and the big day. But, if current polls prove correct, republicans will gain, probably not a majority, but will gain. Here’s step by step what I think will happen. It’s ultimately a repeat of the 90s

1. The democrats either lose control (Probably not) or lose enough seats that their simple majority can’t overcome a filibuster without a decent handful of republicans joining them. Obama, like Clinton, will do this. He moves toward the center, knowing the republicans will never do the same. Since most americans are in the middle, Obama will be able to then paint himself as a moderate while painting republicans as radicals. It worked for Clinton, and history repeats itself. Many republicans have said that Obama is too liberal to do anything in the center, but that’s just underestimating a president’s will to be re-elected. Rest assured Obama will do what he has to do.

2. This balance of power will ultimatly result in the republicans shutting down the government. They did that twice in 1995. Obama, like Clinton, will have moved more toward the center, and, like the 90s, the public will blame congress, not the president, for the standstill. Just as they did in the 90s, the republicans will figure, if you can’t beat him, then half-heartedly join him while hoping for an excuse to impeach him.

3. Health care, in 2012, is a dead issue. Either it will pass in 2010 by compromising with a few decent republicans, or the right will once again obstruct reform. So, in 2012, it either died as an issue, or passed but hasn’t taken effect yet, and is a non-issue. Also, due to the rollercoaster that is the economy, recessions following expansions, and expansions following recessions, it is only natural pattern that the economy will be solid again by the election of 2012. Incumbent presidents don’t lose with a strong economy. Also, Iraq withdrawal is set to be complete by summer of this year, and likewise afghanistan by summer of 2011, so for the 2012 election, the nation will not be at war, ergo no divisive foreign policy dominating the campaign. So 2012, strong economy, no war or HC debate, didn’t the election of 1996 have a similar issueless campaign with an outcome not in your favor, republicans?

4. These events will cause democrats to gain seats for the next few elections. Following 1994, these exact events led democrats to gain in congress 1996, 1998, and 2000

5. And God help you if you try to impeach him. Is your buddy Kenneth Star about to be called in for another try?

Your Assistant | Feb 03, 2010

If your point is that politically, it led to the Democrats getting back in power, you might be right. If you mean that the Republicans were not effective in doing something positive for the country, you’re wrong. Let’s not forget that healthcare reform came thanks to that Republican Congress.
God's Reporter | Feb 03, 2010

Last I looked, both Congress and the WH swing back and forth. GOP gains will be temporary, just like Democrat gains are temporary. Either adapt to the swing, or get voted out.

Bad answer. Next question.
E-5 | Feb 03, 2010

Only if they don’t lose their way like the republicans did after their 1994 victory. They lost touch with their original message of limiting government, and such, and became government growing, self empowering, greedy, power mongering, Washington elitists. That’s why they got the boot in the 2006 congressional elections.
Stan Darsh | Feb 03, 2010

That’s a fair guess. A split government with Obama as President and a Republican Congress with a strong leader may be an economic boon, as proved by the Clinton-Gingrich combination.

How would you alter your assessment should we have a protracted recession with inflation (stagflation) – an early 80s scenario, on steroids?

Warning of cheese: Does he like me?
Hey there. I’m a freshman in high school, and so is this guy. He’s a complete sci-fi nerd, and extremely socially awkward. Very advanced in his scientific knowledge, but he doesn’t know how to joke around. Anyway, I do find him physically attractive, but his inability to recognize humor does turn me off a bit. :/

Today, I ran into him while he was playing a joke on my friend. I accidentally revealed him, and my friend decided to tell him to tag along with us to the library. I think this guy’s kind of cool, so I hang out with him at the library. He picked up a book by Arthur C. Clarke, and he was talking to me about it in great detail, and I said, "Oh, yeah, didn’t he write 2001?" A light kind of shone in his eyes then, and he went on for maybe seven minutes about the entire series, and he was very careful not to spoil anything for me. When he did stop, we talked for a bit about our failed HAL references, and he said, "I thought I was the only person who ever saw that movie." A pause. "Until now." And then he started smiling and stuff.

A bit later on, we were playing a trick on my friend, and he stopped suddenly and said, "This is the longest I’ve been able to talk with anyone without asking them where their classes are."

In addition, we do touch a lot. As in high fives and secret handshakes and the such, but we make it go on for like five minutes.

I don’t know if he’s just being socially awkward or if he might like me. What do you think?

It’s certainly possible that he likes you. I mean, he certainly likes you as a friend, and he connects with you on a level that he probably hasn’t experienced yet, but it’s hard to be absolutely sure.

If you’re interested in pursuing a relationship of some kind with him, I suggest you give it some time. Help him learn to recognize humor, and don’t immediately make your interests known – speaking from experience, you might scare him off or make him even more awkward to talk with.

But yes. It’s certainly possible.

probability analysis?
five different science and six different english books are to be arranged on a shelf. how many possible arrangements can be made if

A) the books of the same subjects are to be arranged together?

B) the books are to be arranged alternately?

how to solve?
thanks in advance!

a) 2
why? arrangement will be either all science then all english OR all english then all science

b) 840
how? 5! + 6!
menykenezer | Feb 06, 2010

we have 5 science and 6 english books to be arranged on a shelf

A)If the books of same subject are to be arranged such that they are together
In other words we have to arrange 2 groups of books
5 science books can arranged within group in 5! ways ——-A
6 English books can be arranged within group in 6! ways ———–B
and we can arrange the 2 groups of books (English and Science) in 2! ways ——-C
so we can perform the entire arrangement in (5!)(6!)(2!) =172800 ——-ANS
(which is given by product of A,B,C above)

B) If the books have to be arranged alternately
we have a situation where we have to first start with arranging 5 Science books (which is one less than no of English books) and arrange the 5 Science books in 5! ways —– E
Now having located the 5 science books we have six spaces as follows
{ }S1{ }S2{ }S3{ } S4 { } S5 { }
note here that {} are the spaces we can arrange the 6 English books in 6! ways —— F
(Also we cannot have an ararngemnet for this question strarting (or ending) with an science book on the shelf)

Hence we have (5!)(6!) = 86400 arrangements ——-ANS
(which is given by product of E,F)
